When Nabi Muhammad ﷺ reached Madinah on the Hijrah, the leaders of the Ansar each hoped he would stay with them. He left the choice to his camel, al-Qaswa', and she knelt close to the house of Abu Ayyub Khalid ibn Zayd al-Ansari of Banu al-Najjar. The Prophet ﷺ lived in Abu Ayyub's two-storey home for around seven months while Masjid al-Nabawi and his own rooms beside it were being built. Abu Ayyub remained devoted to the Prophet ﷺ all his life and, in old age, joined the campaign against Constantinople, where he passed away and was buried beneath its walls. His house stood close to the original mosque and its site now lies within the expanded precinct of Masjid al-Nabawi, so nothing of it can be seen today, but it is remembered as the first home of the Prophet ﷺ in Madinah.
