About Khan al-Tujjar

Khan al-Tujjar, the Merchants' Khan, is the great covered market at the heart of Nablus old city. It was completed in the fifteenth century, and under the Ottomans it became the most prestigious commercial building in the city, where cloth from across the Muslim world was sold and merchants from India, Baghdad, Mosul and Aleppo came to trade. Its long vaulted street of arched shops runs through the middle of the old city, and its position was said to divide Nablus into its eastern and western quarters. At the Mawlid the merchants decorated its floor and walls, and it was a centre of the city's festival life. Restored in recent years, it still sells cloth, clothes, spices and sweets, and al-Nasr Masjid, the Great Masjid of Nablus and the Ottoman clock tower are a short walk away.
