This maqam near al-Khalis is dedicated to al-Khidr, the righteous servant of Allah whom Nabi Musa met and travelled with. Shrines to al-Khidr are found across Iraq, often beside rivers and on old roads. It is a small local shrine in the farmland of the al-Khalis district, north of Baqubah, and there is a second maqam of al-Khidr a few kilometres away.
