Al-Zubayr ibn al-Awwam was a cousin of Nabi Muhammad ﷺ, one of the earliest Muslims and one of the ten promised Paradise. He fought at Badr and in every major battle of the Prophet's lifetime. After he withdrew from the Battle of the Camel in 36 AH, he was killed by Amr ibn Jurmuz while he prayed at Wadi al-Siba', and he was buried there. The town of al-Zubayr, south-west of Basra, grew up around his grave. His shrine is part of the town's great mosque, first founded in 386 AH, which also contains a shrine honoured as the grave of Utba ibn Ghazwan.
