Rabi'a al-Adawiyya of Basra, who lived in the second Islamic century, is the most famous woman of the early Sufi tradition. She is remembered for her teaching that Allah should be worshipped out of love for Him alone, not from fear of the Fire or hope of Paradise. She passed away in Basra, and her grave is honoured here in the old cemetery of al-Zubayr near the graves of al-Hasan al-Basri and Ibn Sirin.
