Shihab al-Din Abu Hafs Umar al-Suhrawardi (539–632 AH / 1145–1234) was the leading Sufi master of Baghdad under the caliph al-Nasir li-Din Allah and served the caliph as an envoy. His book Awarif al-Ma'arif became one of the standard manuals of the Sufi path, and the Suhrawardi order, which spread widely in Persia and India, is named after him. His tomb stands near the old Wastani gate of Abbasid Baghdad, in the Shaykh Umar quarter that takes its name from him. It is crowned by a tall conical dome of stepped muqarnas, one of the most distinctive old buildings in the city.
