Sayyid al-Qasim was a son of Imam Musa al-Kazim and a brother of Imam Ali al-Rida. Tradition relates that after his father's imprisonment he left Madinah and settled quietly among the Arab tribes near the Euphrates, hiding who he was, until his knowledge and character gave him away. He is said to have married and passed away there, and the town of al-Qasim grew up around his grave. His shrine, with its large dome and wide courtyard, is one of the most visited in Babylon and stands at the centre of the town, about 35 kilometres south-east of Hillah. Pilgrims often visit it on their way between Najaf, Karbala and the south.
