Sayyiduna al-Husayn ibn Ali, the grandson of Nabi Muhammad ﷺ and son of Sayyida Fatima, was killed at Karbala on the tenth of Muharram, Ashura, in 61 AH (680), together with members of his family and his companions, after refusing to give allegiance to Yazid. He was buried where he fell, and his son Ali al-Akbar lies at his feet, with the other martyrs of Karbala buried close by. His shrine has been destroyed and rebuilt several times, notably under the caliph al-Mutawakkil, and was enlarged by the Buyids, the Safavids, the Ottomans and the Qajars. Today its golden dome and minarets stand at the heart of Karbala, facing the shrine of Sayyiduna al-Abbas across the open space called Bayn al-Haramayn. It is one of the most visited places on earth, above all for Ashura and Arba'een, when millions arrive, many of them on foot.
