Sayyiduna Ali ibn Abi Talib, the cousin of Nabi Muhammad ﷺ, husband of Sayyida Fatima and fourth caliph, was struck in the Great Mosque of Kufa in Ramadan 40 AH and passed away two days later. He was buried secretly outside the city, on the ridge of al-Najaf, and the grave became widely known in the time of Harun al-Rashid. The shrine was built up under the Buyids in the tenth century and later rebuilt and gilded under the Safavids and in the eighteenth century, and the city of Najaf grew around it. Its golden dome, minarets and great courtyard stand at the centre of the city, beside the Wadi al-Salam cemetery, and it is one of the most visited shrines in the world.
