This hall is what remains of the madrasa built in 1372 by Shakir ibn al-Ghannam, in the reign of Sultan al-Ashraf Sha'ban. It stands on al-Azhar Street beside the mosque of al-Azhar, a few steps from the Ottoman houses of al-Harrawi and Sitt Wasila, which are used today as cultural centres. The graves of the scholars Badr al-Din al-Ayni and Shihab al-Din al-Qastallani are also close by.
