Inside the walls of Travnik's fortress stand the remains of the minaret of the town's first mosque, built after 1480, when an Ottoman garrison was stationed here permanently. The mosque itself was pulled down after the First World War, and only a small level platform marks where it stood. Part of the old stone minaret, about five or six metres high, still rises on the south wall. It is a quiet reminder of the earliest Muslim community of Travnik and can be seen on a visit to the fortress, about ten minutes' walk uphill from the centre.
