The Old Bridge of Mostar was built between 1557 and 1566 by the architect Mimar Hayruddin on the order of Sultan Suleiman the Magnificent, replacing an older wooden bridge over the Neretva. Its single stone arch spans about 29 metres and rises around 20 metres above the river, a remarkable achievement for its time, and the city takes its name from the bridge keepers, the mostari, who guarded it. The bridge was destroyed on 9 November 1993 and was rebuilt using Ottoman building methods and local tenelija stone, reopening in July 2004. The Old Bridge area is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and in summer the famous bridge divers leap from its crest into the cold green river below.
