About Grave of Abdullah Quilliam

William Henry Quilliam earned a reputation as a criminal lawyer in Liverpool after qualifying as a solicitor in 1878. Raised in a Methodist household, he was also active in the temperance movement. In 1887, following a health-related visit to Morocco, he embraced Islam and changed his name to Abdullah Quilliam. Upon returning to Britain, he spearheaded the establishment of the Liverpool Muslim Institute, the first functioning mosque in modern Britain, which also included a boarding school for boys, a day school for girls, and a charitable orphanage. Quilliam led a dynamic centre for Islamic worship, learning, and public outreach. He published works such as The Faith of Islam and edited periodicals including The Crescent and Islamic World , offering a platform for Islamic discourse in Britain. His efforts led to an estimated 600 conversions to Islam in Britain during that era. Recognized internationally, the Ottoman Caliph Abdul Hamid II granted him the title “Shaykh al-Islām of the British Isles”, and he was also appointed as Persian Vice Consul in Liverpool. In 1908, amid personal and professional difficulties, he relocated to Turkey and later returned to England under the name Henri Mustapha Leon, where he continued to publish and lectured on scientific subjects. He spent his final years on the Isle of Man before passing away in London in 1932. While his legacy carries complex contours, Abdullah Quilliam is principally remembered as the pioneer of organised Islam in Britain—founding its first mosque, creating its earliest Muslim communities, and serving as a bold advocate for British Muslims in an Edwardian context.
