The Temple of Jupiter columns are the remains of the great Roman sanctuary that stood on the site of the Umayyad Mosque. What survives here are the tall Corinthian columns and part of the pediment of the western gateway of the temple precinct, dating from the Roman period. The columns stand at the eastern end of Souq al-Hamidiyah, where the covered market opens out in front of the western gate of the Umayyad Mosque. Shops and stalls cluster among them, and the remains give a sense of how vast the ancient precinct was before the mosque was built inside it in the early eighth century.
