Abu Sulayman Abd al-Rahman ibn Ahmad al-Darani was one of the great early masters of the spiritual path in Syria. He settled in the village of Daraya, south-west of Damascus, and passed away there around 215 AH. He was famed for his worship and humility, and his sayings on sincerity and the life of the heart were collected by later Sufi writers and are still quoted today. His grave lies in Daraya beside a mosque that bears his name.
