Bab al-Saghir, the Small Gate, is one of the seven old gates of Damascus, on the south side of the city near the al-Shaghur quarter. During the conquest of Damascus in 14 AH the army of Yazid ibn Abi Sufyan was stationed here, and the gate was later rebuilt by Nur al-Din Zangi, who left an inscription recording that he had lifted a tax on merchants. Just outside it lies the historic cemetery of Bab al-Saghir, where many Companions, members of the family of Nabi Muhammad ﷺ and scholars are buried, so the gate is the usual starting point for visiting those graves.
