About Old Gate of al-Safa

Bab al-Safa was the gate on the south-eastern side of Masjid al-Haram through which pilgrims went out to al-Safa to begin the sa'y. The jurists and al-Azraqi called it the gate of Banu Makhzum. It had five arched openings and fourteen steps down to the floor of the mosque, and over it was written the verse of the Qur'an that names al-Safa and al-Marwah among the signs of Allah. The gate was removed when Masjid al-Haram was enlarged in the twentieth century. Its site lies inside the present mosque, about 65 metres south-east of the Ka'bah, on the side facing al-Safa.
