Souq al-Ghazl, the yarn market, is one of the oldest market areas of Rusafa, and the Abbasid minaret of the Khulafa Mosque that rises over it is popularly called the minaret of Suq al-Ghazl after it. Today it is Baghdad's famous bird and animal market, busiest on Friday mornings, when the lanes around the minaret fill with sellers of birds, ornamental fish, cats and other pets. The Khulafa Mosque stands right beside it.
