This sabil and drinking trough are part of the group of buildings that Sultan Qaytbay built in 1477 just south of al-Azhar, together with a wikala for merchants and a kuttab. The sabil gave water to people and the trough to animals, and the carved stone facade survives. A bookshop now uses the old sabil. It stands in the lane behind al-Azhar, close to Bayt al-Harrawi.
