Sayyida Nafisa, daughter of al-Hasan al-Anwar and great-granddaughter of Sayyiduna al-Hasan ibn Ali, was born in Makkah in 145 AH and grew up in Madinah. She came to Egypt in 193 AH with her husband Ishaq al-Mu'taman, son of Imam Ja'far al-Sadiq, and became known for her learning, worship and generosity; Imam al-Shafi'i attended her gatherings. When she passed away in 208 AH, the people of Egypt asked that she be buried among them, and her husband agreed. Her mosque stands at the end of al-Ashraf Street in al-Khalifa, a short walk from the shrines of Sayyida Sakina and Sayyida Ruqayya. The present building dates from the late nineteenth century and has been renovated in recent years, and it is one of the most visited shrines in Egypt.
