Ali Pasha Mubarak rose from a village childhood to become Minister of Education and Public Works. He founded Dar al-Ulum and the Khedivial Library that became Dar al-Kutub, and wrote al-Khitat al-Tawfiqiyya, a twenty-volume survey of Egypt's towns, streets and monuments. He passed away in 1893. His tomb is in the cemetery of Sayyida Nafisa, just behind the dome of the Abbasid caliphs.
