Muhammad ibn Anan was born in 822 AH in Birhamtush in Sharqiyya, where his brother Abd al-Qadir is also buried, and only memorised the Qur'an as an adult. His piety became so well known that Kamal al-Din, imam of the Kamiliyya madrasa in Cairo, travelled to his village to meet him and took him as his shaykh. He was modest, never refused anyone his help, and was known for his night prayer. He passed away in 922 AH. His shrine is inside al-Fath Mosque in Ramses Square, one of the largest mosques in central Cairo, beside the main railway station.
