The fortress of al-Quseir was built in the sixteenth century under the Ottomans to guard the Red Sea port of al-Quseir, which for centuries was the harbour where pilgrims from Upper Egypt sailed for Hajj. Its walls, towers and old cannons have been restored, and the towers give views over the old town and the sea. A visit takes about an hour.
