Latakia

Ugarit, at Ras Shamra about ten kilometres north of Latakia, was a wealthy Bronze Age port city. Its tablets preserve the oldest known systematic alphabet, written in cuneiform signs, which makes it one of the key sites in the history of writing. Visitors can walk through the remains of the royal palace, temples and houses of the city, which was destroyed around 1200 BC.
