About Graves of the Wives of Nabi Muhammad ﷺ

Within the blessed grounds of Jannat al-Baqi in Madinah lie the sacred resting places of the noble wives of Nabi Muhammad ﷺ, honoured in Islamic tradition as the Mothers of the Believers (Ummahat al-Mu’minin). These women played an essential role in the preservation and transmission of Islamic knowledge, and their lives continue to serve as guiding examples for the ummah. Among those buried here are: A’ishah bint Abi Bakr (d. 58 AH / 678 CE) – renowned for her profound scholarship, eloquence, and narration of hadith. Hafsah bint ‘Umar (d. 45 AH / 665 CE) – remembered for her piety and as the custodian of the written Qur’an during the caliphate of her father, ‘Umar ibn al-Khattab. Juwayriyyah bint al-Harith (d. 56 AH / 676 CE) – whose marriage brought many of her tribe, Banu al-Mustaliq, into Islam. Zaynab bint Khuzaymah (d. 4 AH / 625 CE) – known as “Mother of the Poor” for her unmatched compassion and charity. Sawda bint Zam‘ah (d. 22 AH / 644 CE) – among the earliest women to embrace Islam and migrate to Abyssinia. Umm Habibah bint Abi Sufyan (d. 44 AH / 666 CE) – who was married to the Prophet ﷺ by the Christian king, the Negus of Abyssinia. Zaynab bint Jahsh (d. 20 AH / 641 CE) – whose marriage to the Prophet ﷺ was ordained by divine command, a story recorded in the Qur’an. Safiyyah bint Huyayy ibn Akhtab (d. 50 AH / 670 CE) – of noble lineage, remembered for her generosity and kindness. Umm Salamah Hind bint Abi Umayyah (d. 62 AH / 680 CE) – esteemed for her wisdom, patience, and as one of the foremost narrators of hadith. Not all of the Prophet’s wives are buried in al-Baqi. Khadijah bint Khuwaylid, the first wife of the Prophet ﷺ and the mother of most of his children, rests in Makkah’s al-Mu‘alla Graveyard. Maymunah bint al-Harith is buried at Sarif, just outside Makkah. The collective grave of the Prophet’s noble wives in al-Baqi serves as a profound reminder of their closeness to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, their sacrifices in the cause of Islam, and their enduring legacy as teachers, companions, and exemplars for all generations.
