This grave in Jannat al-Baqi is remembered as that of Ibrahim ibn Muhammad, the youngest child of the Prophet ﷺ, who died in Madinah in 10 AH before he had reached two years of age. His short life is one of the most human passages in the Seerah: it shows the Prophet ﷺ as a father who wept, and in the same hour as a teacher who refused to let grief become superstition. A child born in Madinah Ibrahim was born in Dhul-Hijjah of the year 8 AH, in the quarter of the Banu Mazin, to Mariya al-Qibtiyya, an Egyptian Copt who had come to Madinah with her sister Sirin as part of a gift sent by the ruler of Alexandria in 7 AH. The Prophet ﷺ named the boy after the Prophet Ibrahim عليه السلام, and the birth was received in Madinah as a joy: he was the first child born to him ﷺ since the Makkan years. The infant was placed with a wet nurse in the outskirts of the city, in the household of Abu Sayf the blacksmith, whose wife Umm Sayf nursed him. Anas ibn Malik (RA), who accompanied the Prophet ﷺ on those visits, remembered the smoke of the forge filling the room while the Prophet ﷺ took the child, kissed him and held him close. The day he died Ibrahim fell ill and died in Madinah in Rabi' al-Awwal of the year 10 AH. Anas (RA) described the scene as the child was dying in the arms of his father: "We entered upon Abu Sayf the blacksmith with the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, and he took Ibrahim and kissed him and smelled him... then we entered upon him again after that, and Ibrahim was breathing his last. The eyes of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ began to shed tears. 'Abd al-Rahman ibn 'Awf said to him: 'And you too, O Messenger of Allah?' He said: 'O Ibn 'Awf, it is mercy.' Then he wept again and said: The eye sheds tears and the heart grieves, and we do not say anything except what pleases our Lord. Indeed we are grieved by your parting, O Ibrahim. " Sahih al-Bukhari 1303 The words became a permanent ruling in Muslim life: tears and sorrow are not a failure of patience, and patience is not the absence of feeling. What is forbidden is speech against the decree, not the grief itself. The eclipse that was not a sign for him The sun eclipsed in Madinah on the day the child died, and people began to say that the heavens themselves were mourning the Prophet's son. He ﷺ came out, prayed the eclipse prayer with them, and cut the claim off directly: "The sun and the moon are two signs among the signs of Allah. They are not eclipsed for the death of anyone nor for his life. So when you see that, call upon Allah and magnify Him, pray and give charity." Sahih al-Bukhari 1044 His burial in al-Baqi Ibrahim was washed and carried to Baqi al-Gharqad, and the Prophet ﷺ himself went out to the burial with the Companions. The reports mention that he looked into the grave and levelled the earth over it with his own hand, and that he said of the child that he had a nurse in Paradise who would complete his suckling. The grave lies within the same enclosure as the graves of the Prophet's household and the Companions who were buried around him. The site today The site is inside the Baqi graveyard beside al-Masjid al-Nabawi, where the graves are unmarked mounds of stone and earth. Access follows the graveyard's posted opening times, and entry is currently restricted to men.
