Sayyiduna Muhammad ibn Ali, known as al-Baqir, was the son of Imam Ali Zayn al-Abidin and of Fatimah bint al-Hasan, and so descended from Nabi Muhammad ﷺ through both Sayyiduna al-Hasan and Sayyiduna al-Husayn. He was one of the leading scholars of Madinah in his day, and many of its scholars of hadith and fiqh learned from him. He passed away in Madinah in 114 AH, the year most sources give. He was buried in al-Baqi' beside his father, in the enclosure near the entrance with the graves of Sayyiduna al-Hasan and Sayyiduna al-Abbas. His son, Imam Ja'far al-Sadiq, was later buried beside him.
