Sayyiduna Ali ibn al-Husayn, known as Zayn al-Abidin and al-Sajjad, was the son of Sayyiduna al-Husayn ibn Ali and was with his father's family at Karbala. He returned to Madinah and spent the rest of his life in worship and teaching, and the supplications attributed to him were later gathered as al-Sahifah al-Sajjadiyyah. According to most reports he passed away in Madinah in 94 AH. He was buried in al-Baqi' beside his uncle, Sayyiduna al-Hasan ibn Ali, in the enclosure near the entrance that also holds the graves of Sayyiduna al-Abbas, Imam Muhammad al-Baqir and Imam Ja'far al-Sadiq. A large dome stood over these graves for centuries until 1926, and today they are marked by low stones.
