As'ad ibn Zurarah of the Banu al-Najjar was among the first people of Madinah to accept Islam. He was present at both pledges of al-Aqabah and was one of the twelve leaders chosen at the second, and Mus'ab ibn Umayr stayed with him when he came to teach the people of the city. He died in Shawwal of 1 AH, while Masjid al-Nabawi was being built. He was the first of the Ansar to be buried in al-Baqi'. His grave is shown in the group around the grave of Sayyiduna Ibrahim, the son of the Prophet ﷺ, close to that of Uthman ibn Maz'un, the first of the Muhajirun buried here.
