Shaykh Jamal al-Din ʿAbdullah ibn Muhammad al-ʿAquli was a distinguished Shafiʿi jurist, teacher and judge of medieval Baghdad. Born in 638 AH, he taught at the renowned al-Mustansiriyyah Madrasa and served within Baghdad’s judiciary for many years during the period of Mongol rule. He was widely respected for his religious knowledge, scholarship and public service until his death in 728 AH. His former residence was transformed into a mosque after his death, and he was buried within the complex. The surrounding quarter later became known as al-ʿAquliyyah in association with him. The historic mosque is distinguished by its interconnected domes, marble columns, traditional mihrabs and old minaret, while an original carved wooden structure from the shrine is preserved in the Iraq Museum. The mosque and grave remain situated in the historic Rusafa district of central Baghdad, near Jamiʿ al-Haydar Khanah.
