The ziggurat of Aqarquf is the great temple tower of Dur-Kurigalzu, the city founded around 1400 BC by the Kassite king Kurigalzu I as a royal capital of Babylonia. It was occupied until the end of the Kassite dynasty in the 12th century BC. The tower still rises about 52 m above the plain on Baghdad's western edge, built of mud brick with layers of reed matting, and the lower part has been restored. Excavated palace remains lie beside it. Tickets are sold at the gate, and there are few facilities on site.
