Al-Jumhuriya Bridge crosses the Tigris from Tahrir Square in Rusafa to Karradat Maryam in Karkh. Built by a German company, it was opened by King Faisal II on 23 March 1957 and is one of the main bridges of central Baghdad. It is a busy road and pedestrian crossing with wide views up and down the river, and on the Rusafa side it lands beside al-Umma Park and the Freedom Monument.
