Qal'at al-Jundi was built by Salah al-Din between 578 and 583 AH, according to its foundation inscription, to guard the road across Sinai between Egypt and Syria that was also used by pilgrims. It stands on a hilltop called Ras al-Jundi, high above the surrounding plain. Its walls, gate, mosque and cisterns survive in part, and it is a registered monument. It lies deep in the desert east of Ras Sudr and is reached by a long track, usually with a local guide.
