Nelson's Island is a small island in the bay of Abu Qir, named after the British admiral Horatio Nelson, whose fleet defeated the French in the Battle of the Nile in 1798. Archaeologists have found remains of an ancient settlement on the island, along with graves from the campaigns of 1798 to 1801. Boats leave from the Abu Qir shore, but trips depend on the season and the state of the sea, so it is best to ask locally before going.
