The Montaza estate was laid out by Khedive Abbas Hilmi II, who built the Salamlek in 1892 as a summer retreat on a wooded bay east of the city. King Fuad added the Haramlik palace in 1932, a building of Italian Renaissance style with a tall tower that has become one of the symbols of Alexandria. The palace itself is closed to visitors, but its gardens of palms, pines and lawns run down to the sea and to small beaches and coves, and families come to walk and picnic there. The estate lies at the eastern end of the Corniche.
