About Majra al-Uyun Aqueduct

The Majra al-Uyun aqueduct carried water from the Nile to the Citadel. A first channel was built under Salah al-Din, and the Mamluk sultan al-Nasir Muhammad rebuilt it in stone in the early fourteenth century, with a great intake tower by the river that was added under Sultan al-Ghuri. The arched wall runs for about three kilometres from Fumm al-Khalig near the Nile towards the Citadel, and much of it has been restored in recent years. The six-sided intake tower still stands at its western end.
