Muhammad Rif'at lost his sight as a child and became the most beloved reciter of his generation. His voice opened the broadcasts of Egyptian radio in 1934, and his recordings of the call to prayer and of Qur'an recitation are still heard across Egypt every Ramadan. He passed away in 1950. His grave is in the cemeteries south of the mosque of Sayyida Nafisa, near the tombs of Ahmad Shawqi and Hafiz Ibrahim.
