Muhammad Zahid al-Kawthari was a Hanafi scholar of the late Ottoman state who served as deputy to the Shaykh al-Islam in Istanbul and settled in Cairo in the 1920s. He became known across the Muslim world for his editions of classical texts and his writing on hadith, law and theology, and he passed away in Cairo in 1951. His small domed tomb is in the cemetery east of Imam al-Shafi'i, not far from the tomb of Abu al-Mawahib al-Shadhili.
