Badr al-Din al-Ayni was a great Hanafi jurist and scholar of hadith, born in Ayntab in 1360, who settled in Cairo and became one of its leading scholars and judges. He wrote 'Umdat al-Qari, a large commentary on Sahih al-Bukhari, and many works of history. He built this madrasa behind al-Azhar in the early fifteenth century, and he was buried in it when he passed away in 1451. The building stands on Muhammad Abduh Street near al-Azhar and Bayt Zaynab Khatun.
