Imam al-Layth ibn Sa'd was the leading scholar of Egypt in his time, a jurist and hadith master of the generation after the Followers whose reports appear in all six of the main hadith collections. He was famous for his wealth and his generosity, and Imam al-Shafi'i said that he was a greater jurist than Malik. He passed away in 175 AH and was buried in the Qarafa al-Sughra. His mosque and shrine stand on a lane south of Imam al-Shafi'i, in the old cemetery quarter of al-Basatin.
