Sayyid Abd al-Rahim al-Qinawi was born in 521 AH in Targha in the Maghreb to a family descended from Sayyiduna al-Husayn. After years in Makkah he settled in Qena, where he became the great saint and teacher of Upper Egypt, and he passed away there in 592 AH. His student Abu al-Hasan ibn al-Sabbagh is buried at his feet, and the Andalusian ascetic Abu Abdullah al-Qurashi is buried at the entrance of the mosque. His mosque stands on the main square of Qena, with a garden in front of it. His mawlid is one of the great festivals of the south and draws visitors from across Egypt.
