The mosque of al-Hakim bi-Amr Allah was begun by the Fatimid caliph al-Aziz in 990 and completed by his son al-Hakim in 1013. It is the second-largest mosque of Fatimid Cairo and was built against the northern wall of the city, between Bab al-Futuh and Bab al-Nasr. Its vast courtyard is surrounded by arcades, and its two minarets rise from great stone bastions at the corners of the facade. It was restored in the 1980s and is used for prayer, at the northern end of al-Muizz Street.
