Jamal al-Din ibn Hisham al-Ansari was the great Arabic grammarian of Mamluk Cairo; Ibn Khaldun wrote that word reached the Maghrib of a scholar in Egypt more learned in grammar than Sibawayh. His Mughni al-Labib, Qatr al-Nada and Shudhur al-Dhahab are still central to the study of Arabic. He passed away in 761 AH. His grave is in the cemetery just outside Bab al-Nasr, beyond the Fatimid walls.
