Al-Azhar Park was opened in 2005 by the Aga Khan Trust for Culture on a hill of rubble that had built up over five centuries on the eastern edge of the old city. Clearing the site uncovered a long stretch of the twelfth-century Ayyubid city wall, which has been restored. The park has gardens, water channels, fountains and restaurants laid out on the hill, with views over the domes and minarets of Islamic Cairo to the Citadel. The restored wall runs along its western side, facing the Darb al-Ahmar district.
