In the mid-6th century CE, the Aksumite governor of Yemen, Abrahah al-Ashram, commissioned the construction of a monumental church in Sana’a known as Al-Qalis. This grand structure, built with the patronage and approval of the Abyssinian (Aksumite) ruler, was intended to serve as a major centre of Christian worship in Arabia. The church was noted for its impressive height and rich ornamentation, said to be so striking that tilting one’s head to view its upper reaches could cause a person’s head covering to fall. Abrahah is recorded to have imported fine marble, gilded wood, and mosaics for its construction, with materials and artisans brought from various parts of the Christian world. Historical accounts, including Islamic tradition and later historical works, indicate that Abrahah sought to make Al-Qalis a destination for pilgrimage, aiming to shift the focus of Arabian religious life away from the Ka‘bah in Makkah. The proposal met strong resistance from the Arab tribes, who refused to abandon the Ka‘bah as the central sanctuary. According to early Islamic sources such as the Tafsir of Ibn Kathir, the situation escalated when an individual from Quraysh is said to have entered and defiled the church. In retaliation, Abrahah organised a military expedition to Makkah with the intention of demolishing the Ka‘bah, his force famously included war elephants. As the army approached Makkah, tradition holds that the local population sought divine aid. The Qur’an (Surah al-Fil) and historical narratives recount that flocks of birds were sent, dropping stones upon the army, resulting in its defeat. This event preserved the Ka‘bah’s status as the focal point of pilgrimage, while the site of Al-Qalis in Sana’a eventually fell into disuse. In local tradition, the area where the church once stood later became an unremarkable plot within the city.
