Sulayman Shah is honoured by the Turks as the grandfather of Osman, founder of the Ottoman dynasty. According to tradition he drowned while crossing the Euphrates in the thirteenth century and was buried near the castle of Ja'bar, and a later treaty made his tomb Turkish territory inside Syria. When the waters of Lake Assad were due to rise in 1973, the tomb was moved upstream to Qara Qozak. In February 2015 the remains were moved again, to this site at Eşme (Ashma), about 200 metres inside Syria from the Turkish border, where the tomb stands today.
