Sayyidah Zaynab bint Ali was the granddaughter of Nabi Muhammad ﷺ, the daughter of Sayyiduna Ali and Sayyidah Fatimah al-Zahra, and the sister of Sayyiduna al-Hasan and Sayyiduna al-Husayn. She was present at Karbala in 61 AH, and after the martyrdom of her brother she cared for the surviving women and children of the family as they were taken as captives to Kufa and then to Damascus, where she is remembered for her courage and eloquence before the court of Yazid. This great shrine, with its golden dome, stands in the town of al-Sayyidah Zaynab about ten kilometres south of Damascus and is one of the most visited places of pilgrimage in Syria. Other traditions place her grave in Cairo or Madinah, but the Damascus shrine has been honoured as hers for many centuries and the town has grown up around it.
