The Citadel of Aleppo rises on a great mound in the centre of the old city and has been fortified for thousands of years. Its present walls, gateway and bridge are largely the work of al-Malik al-Zahir Ghazi, the son of Salah al-Din, who ruled Aleppo from 1186 to 1216, with later Mamluk additions. Inside are the remains of palaces, baths, cisterns and two mosques, one of which is linked by tradition with Nabi Ibrahim. The citadel is the centrepiece of the Ancient City of Aleppo, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Visitors climb the long ramp and bridge to the monumental gate.
