About Old Gate of Ali

Bab Ali, also known as the gate of Banu Hashim and called Bab al-Batha by al-Azraqi, was a gate on the eastern side of Masjid al-Haram with three doors and thirteen steps, carrying an inscription of Sultan Murad III dated 984 AH. Beside it stood the Bab Ali minaret, first built by the Abbasid caliph al-Mahdi and rebuilt by Sultan Suleyman in 970 AH in two storeys of dressed yellow stone, with a spire in the Ottoman style. The gate and its minaret were removed when Masjid al-Haram was enlarged in the twentieth century. Their site lies inside the present mosque, about 60 to 90 metres east of the Ka'bah.
