Before the Battle of Badr, the Companion Sa'd ibn Mu'adh suggested building a shelter (arish) of palm branches on raised ground for Nabi Muhammad ﷺ, from which he could oversee the battle and be kept safe if things went badly. The Prophet ﷺ spent the night before the battle there in prayer and supplication, with Abu Bakr at his side, asking Allah for the help He had promised the believers. Masjid al-Areesh marks the traditional site of that shelter, overlooking the battlefield in the town of Badr. It is a modest mosque, and visitors usually come here together with the martyrs' graveyard and the Mountain of the Angels.
